Finding the Right Online Advertising Company for Your Business

There are a multitude of advertising options on the Internet. Finding the one that's right for your needs can be a challenge.
Before choosing a company to help with your online advertising, you should think about what it is you're really trying to accomplish, and what you really need from that company. Your options can range from running a simple classified ad on Craigslist, to contracting with a major agency for a complete online marketing program and website redesign.
The first thing you need to decide is whether your online advertisement will run long-term or short-term. If you're simply needing to run an ad to hire a new receptionist you may not need it for longer than a few days. If you're wanting to generate ongoing sales over a long period of time, there are several different types of advertising companies to consider.
The truth is, you may not need an advertising company at all. If you've got a website, you may just need some effective search engine optimization. That's a discussion for another time but understand your website should be able to take the place of some amount of advertising if it's built properly.
So let's assume you have an ongoing need for whatever it is you're advertising. Now the question becomes, do you need help creating the ad, are you looking for more exposure, or both?
If it's just a matter of driving traffic to your website, you have a lot of choices. There are many ad networks, ad agencies, pay-per-click services, viral marketing programs, email blasts, etc. that would gladly separate you from your money. Trying to decide which is best can be a daunting challenge. There are a lot of scams in the online advertising world.
Our advice has always been to try to target your advertising as precisely as possible so you'll be more likely to "close" those visitors and you can more accurately measure the effectiveness of your ads.
If you need help creating your online ads, there are companies both large and small that can help. The cost of creating a new ad shouldn't be outrageous no matter who you choose, but remember, one ad may not be enough. Don't settle on the results you get the first time. Be prepared to change the ad and test it over and over again. It's the rare company that will do this for you at no additional charge.
Finding a company that can place your ad in front of your targeted audience and do the creative for you is even tougher. Take your time in analyzing your options before investing a lot of money in something that doesn't work or doesn't reach your intended audience.

Seeking Out Alternative Advertising to Pay-Per-Click Services

Pay-per-Click advertising has become increasingly popular, but how effective is it really?
What could be easier? You write a 3-line ad, set a budget, and pick some keywords for promoting your ad. Google and Yahoo do the rest! Your ad is automatically placed in the right places, your results are tracked and recorded, and your monthly budget is never exceeded. Pay-per-click (PPC) is an advertisers dream. Or is it?
In 2006, Google agreed to a $90 million settlement in response to a class action lawsuit that alleged they hadn't done enough to protect their advertisers from click fraud. Click fraud occurs when someone (usually a competitor) clicks on a PPC ad repeatedly to drive up that advertisers expense or max out their PPC budget, thereby eliminating that particular ad.
Make no mistake about it, click fraud exists. Anyone using pay-per-click services or hiring a pay-per-click firm should be aware that this is something that's very difficult to police. You can't count on the search engines to do it for you, or wait around for the next class action suit for your $4.50 credit (that's what Google had to "pay" to each of their advertisers for every $1,000 they had spent). You'll need to monitor your pay-per-click spend very closely. Unless you do, it could be very easy to fall victim to click fraud.

Advertising Made Easy - The Promotional Tote Bag

However, promotional tote bags are one of the most versatile and multi-purpose items your company can adopt for a giveaway campaign. Tote bags are ideal for transporting just about any item, yet they also do more than perform their obvious function. Customizing the promotional tote bag is a way to advertise your business with little effort.
On a basic level, recipients can carry their work or school supplies. One can lug books, papers, and other materials around easily with this product. Beyond, transporting just about any item, tote bags can be used for storage and organization in closets in the home or the office. And, it has become commonplace for conservationists to also use these for grocery shopping, as replacing the traditional plastic or paper sack makes a contribution to the environment. Additionally, traveling of any sort is simplified with the help of this bag. It is the ideal size for an airplane carry-on piece. Storing easily in the overhead storage bins or underneath the seat of the person in front of an individual, a traveler can take along magazines, snacks, an I-Pod, or crossword puzzles to make their flight more enjoyable. In comparison to other smaller products like pens, flashlights, or CD cases, the tote bag is very high profile. If a customer is carrying it, you can be sure that at the same time, someone is reading it. As people walk to work, unpack their lunches, reach for a pen, or cart home the milk, onlookers are asking themselves and most likely the owner of this product, “Now, what does that say exactly?” Hence, the discussion of your company and its purpose begins to flow. This is marketing made effortlessly.
Tote bags work for any occasion, circumstance, and line of work. This promotional item does well during trade shows, especially when you pre-plan by stuffing each one with your informational brochures and marketing materials. Often, corporations use this item regularly for in-house gifts, such as workshops, training seminars, and employee appreciation days. Those in the educational profession find the tote the perfect item for a variety of reasons. It enables instructors to handle those piles of papers to be graded.
Conference directors order the tote bag time and again for academic functions. The required materials are easily organized and presented to attendees, and the participants are able to keep an artifact of memorabilia from the event as well. Similarly, benefits, non-profit causes, and charity events can also implement the promotional tote bag easily into their campaign. In the end, you are not actually required to even have a reason to hand out such a quality item. Simply, having some on hand to hand out to your clients will benefit you in ways you cannot imagine. Try storing this product in your office for guests to freely pick up.
Shop our selection of styles and colors and find the perfect promotional item for your next important workshop, gathering, event, or awards presentation. Moreover, the dimensions of available imprint space allow for a larger customization than many other items. Promotional Tote bags could be fitting for the next promotion that your company is planning- it is a another product that does the advertising for you.

You Should Always have Your Cards with You so that You Will be Ready to Hand Them Out at any Stage

You should always have your cards with you so that you will be ready to hand them out at any stage. Never leave home without them. Every time you meet someone leave a card with them. Distribute them in any public place where you might find yourself. The bus stations, train stations or shopping malls.
Leave a card wherever you have been in a public place, on the counters in bars and stores or in restrooms. Wherever the pubic will see them is a good place. By doing this you will be constantly building up new contacts and they will in turn become new customers. This is your constant aim to get people to visit your premises and see what you have on offer. Advertising is the only way to bring your business to the attention of the public.
If you wish to give your cards a different look you could paste a magnet at the back of each card. These magnets are obtainable from most craft shops. Your cards will have added value and appeal and will be less likely to be thrown away.
You can design your cards with a bold font and print them in bright colours. This is more appealing than plain black and white. They will look interesting and compel the receiver to read the information and hopefully react to it.
The original intention of business cards was to leave one with a client when you had called on them so that they would have a name and contact details to refer to later on.
You can add to this information and make them more than just an identification card. Print your advertisements for special offers and discounts on the backs of the cards. Periodically change the sales items and offers and keep your cards looking interesting. They can become little billboards for your business.
Try networking with your cards whenever you attend any function or exhibition where people of different trades get together. When you have handed a card to a exhibitor take one of theirs in return. This is a fantastic way of introducing your business to potential clients. You can build up your own directory of business people with all the cards that you have received.
Your cards can become good ice breakers at social functions. While you are introducing yourself to someone hand then a card at the same time. This will put your name and business name firmly in their memories and they will probably make an effort to visit your premises. Always be ready to see an opportunity to make a new contact.

It is So Easy to Make Use of Business Cards to Advertise your Business

It is so easy to make use of business cards to advertise your business. They are so inexpensive if you design and print them yourself and they can be very good little advertisements for your business.
Never leave your home without your cards so that you will always be ready to give one to someone you meet who you would like to introduce your business to. This is the way to make people aware of your store in the area. You want people to visit your premises so that they can become your customers. Every time you give someone a card you are telling them about the product or service you provide.
These cards are for advertising so make sure that is what they are doing. Take trouble with the design and make sure that the name of your company is in the largest font in the middle of the card and all your contact details printed clearly in one corner. Do not stop there the card has a back as well. Use this side for advertising your special offers and discounts. If someone dropped this card and it fell with a blank side up it will be lost to you, whereas if it was printed on both sides it would probably be picked up again.
Have these cards printed as attractively as possible, remember they are the billboards of your business and you must feel proud of them. The most important part is distributing them to the public so that they will be eager to visit you store or place of business.
Once you have decided to advertise your business with business cards you will have to plan your distribution campaign. The best places to start are where you would find a lot of people. The local shopping malls, car parks and train and bus stations are good places to distribute your cards. Hand passers by a business card with pride and they will warm to your attitude and be glad to take a card from you. Many of these people will keep the card and visit your place of business whenever they can. You are striving to get good customers and this is what it is all about.
Make a habit of leaving cards behind wherever you have been in public places. Restrooms are good places to leave a couple of cards in a conspicuous place. There will be someone who will pick one up and read it and possibly visit your premises.
You should think about having your business cards professionally printed so that the end product looks good and you can be proud of them. Let them experiment with colour for you and make the design different to the usual style you see every day. The public are more inclined to take note if something is eye catching and interesting.
Add more appeal to your cards by magnetising them. You can paste a little magnet at the back of each card and they will immediately have more status as they will be taken home by the receivers and put on fridges in many homes.

Get your printers to print your business cards in bright colours as this attracts the eye and few people will be able to resist taking a card from you. You need the name of your business to be printed in bold letters so that it is easy to read. Always take your cards with you no matter where you go. You never know when you will meet someone to whom you would like to give a card. Be constantly aware of the fact that you must advertise your business wherever you go as the more people get to know about it the more will visit your store.
Wherever you have been leave a card behind so that someone can find it and possibly get curious enough to visit your place of business.
Professional people have been making use of these little cards for a very long time. They use them to give to their patients and clients as a reference for them to keep so that they will have their contact details in case they need their services again. The reverse side is normally reserved for writing the time and date of the next appointment the client must keep with the relevant person concerned.

Balloons Decorating Ideas

With balloons and party accessories a festive atmosphere quickly develops in to an amazing party. We have given some good balloons decorating ideas below and with this you can use more of your imagination to add more flair to the party room by using the unique design and architectural features of your home.
First and foremost hang balloons to your mailbox to spot the party place; place them as a decoration at the door; or you may even tie them to the birthday child's chair to mark the seat of honor. For an additional unique touch, make a balloon arch by filling balloons with helium, attach them (several inches apart) to a long piece of curling ribbon and fix the ends to the floor next to the doorway.
Hanging balloons in bunches is one of the best idea to create best effect. If you have a plan to fill balloons with helium, wait until the party day so that it floats well. Attaching balloons to light fixtures and hanging them in doorways or anywhere that impress the crowd is a brilliant idea. Use colorful curling ribbon to tie balloons together, and curl the ends by pulling the ribbon among your thumb and blade of scissors.
Helium-filled balloons decorations
A simple table decoration is quite simple to make with helium balloons, moreover all latex or a combination of Mylar and latex. Anchor the group to the table with a safety pin in the cloth or with a small wooden block enclosed in decorative paper. Do not forget that latex helium balloons stay floating for just about eight hours. So do this on the day of the party.
For all these decorations it is most excellent if all the balloons are of the same size. To attain this cut out a cardboard pattern and check the size every time you blow up a balloon.
By using your fishing line and paperclips you could move on to the twirl arch. This is made of groups of four helium balloons fixed firmly together by paperclips and threaded onto the line like pearls on any necklace. You would require heavy weights wrapped in paper to safe each end of the arch. Try using a five liter plastic bottle filled with sand.

Lead Quality and Long Term Success

The quality of a lead has been debated for years and will continue to be debated for the foreseeable future.
Why?
Because there is no standard definition for a quality lead. Advertisers and marketers typically try to define lead quality by asking questions like: Is a quality lead defined by conversion based on time? Is it based on Return on Investment (ROI)? These questions will continue to go unanswered because different businesses have different benchmarks when considering lead quality.
Another prominent question is: Does lead quality diminish over time because of over-exposure?
Again, there is no definitive answer, but I believe lead quality diminishes over time for 2 reasons: because most advertisers don’t “refresh” or “re-adjust” the ad; and because consumers become desensitized to the ad content due to over-exposure.
How can this problem be addressed?
I believe lead quality can be improved by changing the advertising message consistently. If the message is changed 4 times a year, it will stay fresh. Very few ad campaigns can run forever without change. For every “Just Do It “and “Priceless”— campaigns that have been continuously refreshed and re-adjusted—there is a “Where’s The Beef?” or a “Pizza!, Pizza!” –branding phrases that were extremely popular, but have fallen by the wayside because they were not updated.

Catalogs also help in maintaining the budget for the customers. In using catalogs, buyers can be informed if the product that they want to buy would suit their budget. Or they can also save up for the product that they want.
Most catalogs also have dedicated phone numbers for customers who cannot get out of their homes. This is one way for customers to interact with customer service representatives and ask questions on the products or services that they want.
An advantage of catalogs is that they can be opened on the leisure time of the customers. They are not hurried to make the decision right then and there. They can just skim the catalogs on their leisure time and if they though of any questions, call up the dedicated phone number right away and have their questions answered.
Some catalogs even have user tips and how-to articles that can really help in understanding the use of the products or services more. This also serves as a reference guide that can help customers remember to maximize the use of the product that they bought.
Catalogs serve as the window to all the products and services that you offer on your company. By providing catalogs to your customers and potential customers as well, you are letting them peek inside your store and see all the items that you want them to avail.

Effective And Affordable Types Of Advertising

First of all, every type of media has pros and cons. Here are a few:
Billboards work okay if they are in a high-traffic area and have a short, easy to read message, but they could be very expensive, and many times your ad is moved from a good location to a bad location, especially if you are advertising on a limited budget and utilize this type of program. The better locations are normally the most expensive. Also, you must remember that the prospective new customer has only a fraction of a second to see your message as they speed by, and the amount of traffic during the time of the year are factors. Will they take the time, or be able, to write down your contact information?
Television & Radio normally reaches a large audience, depending on the area, but doesn’t always reach your desired demographic. Effectiveness depends on the time of day the ad is run, and if you have a limited budget, normally your ad isn’t given the premium times. Time of the year is also a factor. Needless to say, if everyone is away on vacation, your exposure could be less than at other times of the year. Also, important is where the time slot places your ad. If you are advertising a product for senior citizens, and your ad is placed in a program about snowboarding, your chances are slim to none that you’ll be getting any new customers for your hard earned money.
Imprinted products such as pens, key chains, baseball caps, t-shirts, etc. normally get your name out there, but do they work? I personally have six baseball caps, at least thirty pens, various t-shirts, three calendars, and an unknown amount of small writing pads that I’ve picked up over the years. To tell you the truth, I have never contacted any of the companies that paid their hard earned cash to have these things imprinted. Also, no one has ever come up to me when I was wearing an imprinted baseball cap or t-shirt, and asked me to stop and wait a second so that they can write down the imprinted information. If my life depended on it, I couldn’t even name one company’s name imprinted on any of the products I currently own. I know that the companies that provide imprinted items say your business name must be seen so many times before it is recognized, but is this really the way?
Print media – newspapers are a good way to reach a large amount of the local population, but aren’t always able to zero in to the demographics you want to reach. An ad in a newspaper is normally very costly, and on a limited advertising budget, you’ll normally get a small, hard to read, black and white ad placed somewhere in a section of the newspaper that people normally don’t go to. Other factors are the time of the year, weather, and days of the week. Needless to say, there are less readers when most of the population is on vacation, away for the weekend or holiday, or if the weather is terrible and they don’t even go out of their homes to pick up the paper on that one important day or week that your ad appears.
Print media – magazines are good because they normally reach the demographics their advertisers want the reach. Since they are usually a specialty publication, and are usually read by only the people that are important to the advertiser, advertisers usually get good results. But you must be careful about the circulation they provide. Also, magazine advertising could get expensive if you are looking to run a full-color ad in a national publication. Unlike newspapers, readers of magazines normally are more educated and keep the magazine for reference long after they read it, so your ad will continued to be viewed long after it is run. Be sure to advertise in a publication that is published on weekly or monthly, instead of annually, semi-annually or quarterly. Readers will only pick up the publication once, so the ones that sit on the racks for longer periods of time are a waste of rack space and your money.
Online advertising is the newest and fastest growing way to advertise. The Internet now provides everything from links on sites, to banner ads on sites, to small ads on sites, to pay per click advertising. Be very careful when deciding that this is the way to go. Get all the facts about the amount of guaranteed exposure you’ll receive. Just because a web site gives a great sales presentation doesn’t mean you’ll be getting any exposure. This could be a very expensive way to advertise should you be looking for maximum exposure. An important hint - having your own web site is extremely important in today’s business world. A well-designed web site can provide you with worldwide exposure.
Okay, now that you are even more confused, I will end with few last tidbits. 1- Find out the amount of exposure you are going to receive, for the amount of money you are willing to spend, before committing to an advertising campaign. After all, even if it only costs you $1.00, it is a wasted dollar if you don’t get anything in return. 2 - Be sure to track your advertising for effectiveness by ascertaining from new customers how they found out about you. 3 - The experts say it takes at least three to four times before your ad works, so be ready to commit for a longer period of time. 4 – When designing your advertising campaign ad, use the “What would interest me” technique. If the ad doesn’t get your attention, it won’t get the attention of others. Keep it short and make it eye-catching. 5 – Logos, although they are important to you, aren’t always an important part of an ad. If the public recognizes your logo, why are you advertising? You want to reach the folks that don’t recognize your logo. Ad message is more important than a logo, especially if you have a limited space to work with.

Why Logo Is That Important

Among the first things an entrepreneur would do when he starts his business is to get a logo designed. A well-thought, well-designed logo can speak volumes of your brand and image. Logo design is really that important. Today I got a big surprise at a popular shopping mall located along the East Coast of Singapore).
I have not stepped into that mall for ages, and was duly impressed with the revamp. It certainly looked much younger and more hip. Then, I got into the lift. There was this large poster and I was casually browsing it when I saw their logo.
I felt that the simple "P.P." logo design (with non-descript font arranged in a boring side-by-side format) was completely incompatible with the ‘feel’ of the mall! I guess I was staring at it a tad too long because a pair of young brothers, around 6 - 8 years old, and their parents started to look at it too. Below is the brow-raising conversation that haunted me the rest of that afternoon:
Young Brother: P. P. What is P.P? Sound like going toilet to wee wee (giggle) Older Brother: No, it means no pthui pthui (spitting).
You could dismiss that conversation as unintelligent babble of two young kids who could not know better. But you would not walk away from the adults’ remarks without learning one or two things about the importance of logo design.
Mum : Just 2 “P” only, so simple. Must be in-house job. Cheapskate. Wonder why they use green and blue? Made people think they copy Standard Chartered Bank. Dad : Oh ya? The car park was in green and blue. I thought it was because of Stan Chart.Mum : There is no Stan Chart here! Here only has HSBC.
This “silly” conversation only confirms one thing: That logo design is not ideal. A logo is a visual short cut to the corporate personality and character. If it fails to do that, then it might as well not be there.
I was also reminded of an article I read recently. It said corporate logos have lost their importance as people have absolutely no motivation whatsoever to feel or remember them. A simple name that is easy to recall should suffice. However, this family’s conversation just confirms that people still look at logos, and associate their perception, feeling, understanding, preference and judgment simply by looking at a logo’s design and colours. If a logo design is not important, this new school of thought has a lot to explain about the emotional and psychological connection one has with the famous golden arches of McDonalds, the half bitten fruit of Apple, curvy lettering of Coca-Cola or the swirled wing of Nike. How many can think of these awesome giants without recalling their widely recognizable, familiar and famous logo design?
Why is a logo design important? Without being over simplistic, a logo can
1. Elicit immediate recognition (especially if the company has a “common” sort of name)2. Be a visual short-cut to convey the company’s personality, character, attitude, belief, goal3. Relate to your clients by conveying a feeling of familiarity, credibility and warmth4. Association with quality and product/service satisfaction
Logo design is a complex job where you and your creative expert has to dig deep internally into corporate philosophy, mission, goals, persona, look into product features and benefits and understand employees’ mindset of the company. And externally, you would want to know what your target audience think of your product or your competitors’ product. Their perception is important because it is never easy to shift a mindset. Logo design is an important part of corporate branding. So be prepared to fork out a decent amount of time, money and resources to get a branding expert to help you develop your logo.
However, if you just want a nice-to-look-at logo with a small budget and not want to risk the designer to coming back with something that is totally different from your preferences, do some homework. You can run through this simple exercise:
Start thinking of your corporate (not personal) persona in terms of:
1. Adjectives (Does “macho”, “relaxing” or “fast as lighting” describe your corporation/product?)2. Colour (Would that strong chilli red echo your masculine personality?)3. Shapes (Do you see the corporate self being tall or cutesy-rolly-polly?)4. Style (Are you a fashion go-getter or a forever green classic?)
Let’s say you are selling sportswear targeted at young guys who dig extreme sports, so, the exercise would be something like this:
1. Adjectives - macho, rugged, tough, dangerous, high risk, extreme fun 2. Colour - strong, bright, loud, shouts out for attention3. Shapes - precise, strong angular shapes4. Style - street fashion style, casual wear, everyday wear
How would your logo design look with the above? Already, you will have a fair idea of a “bad” logo and a “good” logo when you see one relative to your descriptors above.
Just as I have mentioned in another of my article "Your Ad Agency Really So Lousy?", you got to do your bit by offering an effective agency brief. If you can’t, just try this little exercise. I know it helps because I have used it with many clients who claim they didn’t know what they want, what the logo should be like and yes, with a small budget. This exercise works. If you want to do up the full work, contact the professionals. Penny wise, pound foolish is certainly not the way to go. That is, even if you are artistically inclined and know how to use a drawing software! There are many more issues to consider. Things like matching CMYK with Pantone colours, applying the logo correctly on hotstamp, reverse and direct, etc; without these technical expertise, you might find yourself with a beautiful logo which cannot be reproduced!

Niche Marketing and the Demands of Outsourcing

While opening a business is often a gamble of sorts, in the world of online niche marketing, your greatest asset is often finding the right niche to expose and profit from. Granted, it takes time and expense to find the niche that's just right for you, but it's pay-off can be immense. No, there are no guarantees in this line of work, but neither do offline businesses get guarantees of certain income.
However, here are certain strategies for choosing a niche that has a high probability of success.
Some schools of thought propound the idea tha supply and demand is a good indicator of niche success. In fact, statistical information supplied by search engines is used to determine the popularity of certain search terms. This information is useful because terms which are being searched frequently are terms which have a large audience of Internet users looking for more information on the niche subject.
These same terms can be popular internet searches. From this statistical information you can build a list of potential niches. Once this list is compiled, it is time to begin researching the competition in each of these niches. Ideally the niche you select will be one which has a large audience and not much competition. These are niches which are in low supply.
It goes without saying that protecting your niche should be a top priority and that includes who you work with to outsource your ideas. Many Internet niche marketers are comfortable outsourcing their copywriting and their website design.
However, they are more protective about outsourcing tasks such as marketing, niche selection and keyword development. This is because although copywriting and website design both involve optimization for keywords the strategies for doing so are readily available on the Internet.
Developing related keywords for the niche is very important as they are absolutely critical and conventional wisdom holds that an extensive list of keywords should be developed for a particular niche to be successful. Some in the industry recommend developing approximately 200 keywords for each niche.
Finally, a non disclosure agreement (NDA) is one way for the marketer to protect his niche when he is outsourcing. An NDA is essentially a document specifying the rights of the employer and employee in regard to sensitive materials. The NDA can be drafted to include any terms the client sees fit.
Perhaps restrictions can be made on which materials are sensitive, how these same materials can be transmitted, what time frame is necessary to complete a project and the duration time for which the contract is binding.
Common timeframes include the duration of the project or a set number of days, weeks, months or years. In niche marketing a timeframe of at least one year after the project is completed is recommended to prevent the contractors from entering the same niche immediately after the project ends.

The Secret to Yellow Pages Advertising Nirvana? The Unexpected Takes You There

CONTRAST is The Secret!
Visual and verbal contrast can pop your Yellow Page ad to the very top of your prospects’ mind and attention. Open the Yellow Pages to your ad right now. Does your ad visually leap out from the clutter and background noise of your competitors? If not, if it blends into the sea of yellow, then your ad stands little chance of being seen or heard.
And that’s just the way it works: your ad has to be seen to be read; your ad has to be read to have its message effect your prospects; and your message has to move your prospects before they’ll bother acting on it. Finally, the customer has to call before you can ring up new business from your Yellow Page ad. The strategy is simple, but the execution takes skill. And the first step requires the most artistry.
So how can you ensure your Yellow Page ad is seen amongst a sea of competitors? Use unexpected imagery and words that work together, to convey your unique, compelling story. The background noise and clutter is actually created by predictable ads, generic images, and uninspired copy. Just be strikingly different in your approach and you’ll stand out like a glittering gold coin amongst rusty pennies.
Jolting your prospects’ senses with the unexpected requires some design talent and skill, but is possible for a lot of do it yourselfers. But, grabbing the readers’ eyeballs AND creating a message that’ll move prospects to call you requires an expert with:
Extensive Yellow Page experience,
Incredible design skills, and
A silver-tongued pen.
Hiring such an expert costs more, but the reward for making a strong emotional connection with your audience is having prospects jumping to call you first – and having your phone jump off the hook with new business in return. And isn’t that the point of Yellow Page advertising in the first place?

Advertising 101 - How to Create Better Ads

INTRODUCTION
"Advertising is a science, not an art"
Definition: The word advertising is from the root Latin advert: ad (to) vertere (turn), which means to call attention to. To advertise means: “to describe or praise publicly, usually to promote for sale.”
Advertising is a special form of communication intended to persuade consumers to respond in a positive way toward a product, service or idea. In Washington, DC, the home of many non-profit advocacy organizations it means to persuade or to change minds.
In other words the goal of advertising is to influence people:
-to buy something,
-to think well of something,
-to ask they take a particular action.
Contrary to popular opinion, advertising is a testable, provable, science, not an art. Effective advertising relies on a few simple strategic formulas. Done well however advertising can be done artfully. And should be.
It pays to advertise.
The basic purpose of advertising is to inform. Often, simply giving basic information about a product or service is sufficient. i.e., classified ads are simple information ads.
“Top of Mind awareness.”
Memory is the cornerstone of creative strategies in advertising. The basic assumption of this strategy is that the media environment is cluttered and memory is limited. Since memory is limited, it is important that our advertising give customers something worth remembering, otherwise they will simply forget you.
Frequency and repetition is crucial. Frequency and repetition is crucial. How many times do you have to tell a dog to sit in order for her to learn how?
Advertising exists along a continuum. Short-term traffic builders vs. long-term awareness builders.
1. Pricepoint ads are only sale advertising: Jerks.
2. Awareness and Image: Pulls.
How does Advertising really work? It creates:
1. AWARENESS, which creates:
2. INTEREST, which creates:
3. MOTIVATION, which creates:
4. DEMAND, which creates:
5. ACTION!
THE IMPORTANCE OF STRATEGY
I. Advertising is part of a larger plan
The most successful companies have an advertising or marketing plan as part of their larger business plan. Advertising is only one method of communication in this plan. It must be linked to other communication strategies to be truly effective
II. Starting to advertise
A. Position your product. This means to understand how your product looks and feels compared to other similar products in the marketplace. Jeep is positioned as an upscale outdoorsy anyplace-anytime vehicle, compared to Volvo, which is positioned as a sensible, safe, financially secure “investment in security”. Position means to be placed in a certain way in the consumers mind. Having a unique sales position means you can create a unique sales message:
1. Against other similar products (market segment)
2. In new areas (market penetration)
B. Create a strategy
1. Marketing Strategy is the master plan
a. in which you determine actual product, price,†distribution, promotional effort
b. From Marketing Strategy grows creative strategy
2. Creative Strategy is what you say and how you say it. You can't have a good ad without the following:
Major Checkpoints of Creative Strategy
1. Objective: What the advertising should do
2. Research: Is there any and what does it tell us about perceptions, both positive and negative.
Qualitative vs. Quantitative.
3. Target Audience: Who is your consumer exactly. It's ok to have more than one target.
4. Key Consumer Benefit: Why should they buy your product?
5. Support/lnformation: A reason to believe that benefit
6. Tone and Manner: A statement of the product "personality" or the personality of the "statement"
III. What works best
A. The three parts of any Ad
1. Benefit Statement: Headline
a. Get your basic message here and see it from the consumers side
b. Keep it simple
c. Inject news
d. Don't be afraid of Long Headlines (Research shows more sales)
2. Illustrations vs photos
a. Photos generally better
b. Inject story appeal
c. Keep it simple
3. Information/support
a. Support claim or promise
b. Don't be afraid of long copy. Resistance does not increase after 100 words.
c. Testimonials help, although cliched
4. Call to action--What do you want the consumer to do?
a. Coupons
b. Telephone
c. Visit
5. Forget everything but Rule 1. Benefit, benefit, benefit
IV. Media Strategy --Winning a place in the consumers mind
A. Campaigns--A series of ads with a single goal similar in style and execution, slightly different in message.
B. The importance of frequency
1. Awareness building
2. Opportunity improvement capture
C. Placement
1. Research Media Kits (refer to marketing plan)
2. Flight strategies save money
V. Media
Television
Advantages: Excellent medium for emotional impact and singular message. Fantastic reach.Disadvantages: If bought with enough Total Rating Point's, it is far too costly. It is hard to target and there would be lots of waste over the entire SMSA. Production costs to do quality advertising are expensive
Cable television
Advantages: Can select geographic areas specifically, television allows for high emotional impact. Cable is affordable. Disadvantages: Networks skew too heavily toward particular targets
Radio
Advantages: Can be fairly targeted, allows for impact and emotional appeal through broadcast, cost effective. Disadvantage: Fair percentage of wasted geographical listenership over SMSA.
Magazines
Advantages: Prestigious environments, color, room for more detailed information, can target psychographically. Disadvantages: Very few magazines isolate specific areas, so there's plenty of wasted circulation. Lack of reach with specialty publications. Require many different placements.
Newspaper.
Advantages: Can target specific areas with regional placements, large space units are emotionally impressive, newspaper has an urgent, timely feel, and there's room for longer copy or more photography.Disadvantages: Normally a retail medium, not usually good for impact or awareness. Limited reach. Poor reproduction
Direct mail
Advantages: Highly targeted, good for long, informative messages. Disadvantages: Not a prestigious or "important" medium, relatively expensive to produce in 4-color, big impact or large numbers. This medium works best when linked to response offers. It is private and quiet in nature.
Outdoor and transit advertising
Advantages: Easy to target, great for short "reminder" messages. Disadvantages: Public transportation users become primary target, uses up too much budget if done right, can't stand alone as primary medium, "good" locations are very limited.

Aerial Advertising

An aerial advertising is something like when a small towing airplane tows your company's banner behind it to advertise company through the banner. The main goal behind this is to let your company logo or slogan be seen and remembered by thousands of potential customers at whatever place you want and whenever you desire. The message given in such a banner is often called aerial message. Aerial advertising is spreading like nothing now a days due to its great capabilities to advertise at targeted audience.
Its a fact that people have the tendency to look up when they hear an airplane. This attraction of people towards a flying airplane will make your aerial message seen and, most importantly, remembered by various others. Many private limited companies offer aerial advertising now a days and it has been noticed that average view time they provide for your aerial ad is somewhat 17 seconds directly in front of the targeted area. Even if the time seems to be shorter, the viewers want to trail such airplane banners from horizon to horizon. This way they can get your aerial advertising a lot longer. The exposure is even greater if the pilot circles around.
Usually in aerial advertising flying billboards attached to the airplane soar at 1000 feet high when over the land and 500 feet when over water's edge. Surveys carried out have declared that after 30 minutes of time nearly 88% of the people remembered seeing the aerial ad go by and also 79% viewers remembered as which product or service was being advertised using billboards attached to the airplane.
In aerial advertising airplanes are made to fly over at places specially targeted like over crowded beaches, theme parks, festivals, rock concerts, race tracks, ball parks, rush hour traffic and in fact just about anywhere as suitable. Depending on the customer's demand airplanes can also be made to fly in different local, regional and national markets to advertise the aerial banner of the customer and also different types of custom aerial billboards, like custom painted and computer generated, are created as per the requirements to do the advertising in more effective way.
If you are looking to advertise your company name, logo, brand or product, it could be nothing better then aerial advertising. You can find many companies providing this type of advertising at very low cost. Also there is a great benefit as in aerial advertising you can target any outdoor place far and wide to advertise your product or services through billboards and aerial banners. As a result aerial advertising is far better then any other type of advertising. Only thing is that you need to make right choice of company providing aerial advertising services. You can also find many websites in Google of companies providing these services.

4 Great Tips to Selecting a Marketing or Advertising Agency

There are many times in the career of a marketing person where this issue will come up - which agency should I use? From the perspective of the advertising agency or the marketing agency, the answer is simple, "Use us!"
The client is usually pressured from many quarters, among which are the pressure to deliver results, the watching eyes of everyone anxious to see a "great advertisement" and of course, the pressures from various Account Executives and Account Directors to make the big decision
There are many resources available that discuss various criteria that can be used to select the best marketing or advertising agency. Over the years, we have found that all of these boil down to just 4 key factors. Do we dare say that these are the "4P's" of selecting an advertising agency? OK, we dare.
So, here are the 4P's to help you select the best advertising or marketing agency for your all-important marketing campaign.
People
There is a very important element in the selection process that many miss. In today's high pressure, results-oriented business environment, we often forget a fundamental truth. The world, even the hard-nosed business world, is made up of PEOPLE. You can work with the most creative minds, the strongest marketing teams, and maybe even pure geniuses. The reality is, if you simply cannot "get along", it is highly unlikely that you will come up with a winning campaign. The People element cannot be over-stressed. Even a mediocre team, inspired by great team spirit, can produce astounding campaigns. The sense of belonging, of ownership, spurs people to greater heights. In an advertising campaign, where emotions, values and vision play such important roles, it is the people who will win through. Not the genius. If you cannot trust your agency, you can forget about doing anything great.
Proposal
If people were the only considerations, then the business world will be filled with friends and lovers. How wonderful. Unfortunately, true substance is still a very necessary ingredient in the success of any marketing campaign. This is so important that most of the time, the Proposal, the Big Idea, the Grand Creative; have formed the linch pin of all decisions. This can work. This does work. So, this is an element that must not be overlooked. The proposal should cover not just the creative vision, but all the elements that make the campaign successful. Some things to look out for in a good proposal would be:
- Clear vision and objectives- media plan (if applicable)- Great creatives (usually mistaken to be the ONLY element for a winning proposal)- Project Planning and Timelines (project management elements)
There are many things to look out for depending on the type of campaign that is planned. But this should give a good idea. Like I said earlier, judging proposals have been a long standing practise in selection of advertising agencies and marketing agencies.
Process
But a great proposal and a nice team of people might be present, however, to ensure the success of a marketing campaign, the proper processes must be in place. You must have a good understanding of the organisation, the resource and the way of working of the selected agency. In a major advertising campaign, the number of elements could mean that different teams are involved in different aspects. Does the agency have enough manpower and talent to support the scale? If they have the people, do they have an established, well rehearsed way of communications and coordination? This might seem trivial, but once you are in the middle of a major campaign, and the key Account Manager calls in sick, you will surely appreciate a rock solid process.
Price
Yes, price is indeed a consideration. Don't we all wish we had budgets the size of a mountain? Even Bill Gates have to thing about budgets. While this is important, it is also the last piece that needs to be considered. Pay peanuts to get monkeys. Sounds familiar, right? While it is true that the most expensive is not necessarily the best and the cheapest, not always the worse; price is indeed a poor guage of the potential success of a marketing agency. Work out a realistic budget. Your local 4A's (or whatever the association of advertising agencies is called in your neck of the woods) should have a price guide available on request.
There you have it. 4 P's as promised. With this, you should be in good standing to make an intelligent decision on the marketing agency to be selected. This is by no means the best, the only or even an assured way to make the decision. However, this is a good starting point, and if used prudently can help tremendously. Here's to your next successful marketing or advertising campaign!

How to Use Public Access TV to Promote Your Business and Build Your Credibility

Local public access TV stations may be the best kept secret in America. Where else can you get free access to training, equipment, support and the local airwaves all in one location? For small businesses, local access TV is an opportunity to produce your own TV show, become known in the community and build your reputation as an expert in your field.
Here are five easy ways to get on your local public access TV station:
1. Check your local listings
Not every town has all three “PEG” outlets, but with over 3,000 community media centers across the country, chances are there’s one near you. Check your town’s Web site or contact your town hall. Another misconception: You do not necessarily have to live in the town to utilize their community access station. Most access centers are eager for new producers and new programs. FYI: The Alliance for Community Media is a national, non-profit organization that promotes and supports public access TV. They maintain an extensive database and links to local access centers. Look for your town there.
2. Get free training
Most community media access centers provide frequent producer orientations, equipment training and studio instruction. The focus is typically on getting you up and running in one or two sessions. Volunteers and producers are the life blood of public access, so you’ll find plenty of accommodating help.
3. Go make TV
As long as you’re armed with an idea, you’re ready to produce a show. If you’re not quite ready for your close up, start by assisting with another show, or by being a guest on another’s producer’s program. There’s no shortage of opportunities in front or behind the camera, so just dive in.
FYI: For more ideas and information, check out the Public Access TV Blog, which has some suggestions for getting started. The Alliance for Community Media’s online bookstore also features books and videos for additional training or inspiration.
4. Fix it in post
You can produce your program “live to tape,” if you’re doing a talk show or just want to do your show “on the fly.” In most cases, you’re probably going to want to edit your tape. Post production is where you can make your program look more professional by editing mistakes, inserting graphics or adding music. Most home computers now include basic editing or movie-making software, and those starter programs are relatively easy to master.
5. Promote and distribute
Once your show is complete, find out from your public access station when it’s going to air so you can promote your premiere! You may find that they run it several time per week. In addition to the local airing, you should definitely consider expanding your distribution. One way to extend your reach is to ask your channel to “bicycle,” or share your show with other access centers. A more direct approach is to upload your FYI: Most video sites restrict uploads by file size (100MB) or length. Go beyond the obvious sites like YouTube and Google Video, and upload your video (or shorter clips) to Blip.tv and Veoh.com. These are very-user friendly, free video hosting sites with lots of great features.
Tips & Tactics
Finally, here are a few other tips to maximize your ROI:
•Public Access TV need not be cheesy. The technology and equipment have come a long way – so take advantage of the resources available.
•Expand your video from local public access to the Internet. Web users are downloading 7 billion videos per month!
•Be sure to save your video as an electronic file for the web, such as a Quicktime movie (.mov), or a Windows movie (.wmv). After you upload your video, many video sites will provide the HTML code so you can embed your video on your own website.
•A study by the Wharton School of Business reports that video can be 600% more effective in communicating a message than print. Tap into that power.

$70 Billion or Euro 53.07 bn or 36.29 bn is Spent in America Alone Annually on Advertising Time!

Now that's a lot of money.
But before we go further, consider this "50% of my advertising is wasted but I don't know which 50%", that translates to $35 bn or Euro 26.8 b or £18.14 is wasted in America alone – annually!
And they say "Advertising works", hmmm, works to waste one hell of a lot of your money that's for sure!
Meanwhile Admap's report on ad avoidance examined research evidence on both side of the Atlantic and confirmed that people are increasingly trying to avoid advertisements.
Now I wonder which 50% we should apply that little shard of information to?
Americas' Ad Age said recently that somewhere between 254 and 5,000 is a number that represents just how many commercial messages an average consumer gets each day.
However attempts to beat clutter only end up yielding more of it, a bitter irony bound to have dire consequences for a business already struggling with questions of relevance and effectiveness.
And just about everybody agrees on two things: It's way too high, and the industry's not doing anything to reduce its own overproduction.
It would be very funny if it wasn't so sad, the fact of the matter is that clutter is leading to more clutter
You might say that it is paring back on traditional media, right? Actually, TV commercial pods are fatter than they've ever been, and they're growing like a 14-year-old Xbox fan's waistline.
The advertising industry is crushing itself under the weight of its own messaging, squeezing the effectiveness out of its product as consumers get more and more inured to the commercialisation of their culture and surroundings.
"At the end of the day, the ability of the average consumer to even remember advertising 24 hours later is at the lowest level in the history of our business," said Bob Barocci, president-CEO of the Advertising Research Foundation.
Hmmm – now which 50% shall we add this too?
And now the end is near? Recently there was a major study on Internet clutter finding that the more ads on a page, the click-through rates, brand impact and product consideration decline. Surprise, surprise!
Research shows that a magazine reader looks at glossy ad pages rather favourably, as part if the editorial content, while a TV viewer is more likely to see 30-second spots as interruptions. Between these two poles of acceptance and revulsion falls internet users, who are simultaneously hit with both scads of generic, untargeted ads and more finely tuned pitches that takes into account behaviour that gives some semblance of relevance to advertising.
We need to refocus on the consumer, not the media. The lens needs to be refocused not on media but on the consumer, who's cumulatively bludgeoned by commercial messages as he moves from medium to medium.
We need to refocus our efforts onto interactive communication because with interactive marketing communication, there is a commitment to participate, which in turn leads to a set of possibilities, which are significantly different in how they affect the communication process, itself.
The need for product information. Image advertising and clutter together with active ad avoidance doesn’t give the information needed to buy knowledge-driven products. Moreover communication results from an interaction in which two parties expect to give and take. Audience members must be able to give feedback. Media practitioners must be sensitive to the information contained in the feedback. This give and take can result on real understanding or real feedback.
The need for Interactive Marketing Communication. Put simply, because there is a human desire for interaction. We have created a media society during the past 40 or 50 years where there is an extraordinary reduction in interaction because of the one-way and more passive form of information retrieval that exists. Leading to the familiar problems of lack of accountability and clutter together with a loss of trust.
People desire to be taken account of, to affect change, learn and personalise their relationships with their environment. There are a phenomenal number of reasons, which cause people to interact, which go far beyond just giving them things.
When people participate in interactive marketing communication they are told that their efforts and feedback are of positive help to the advertisers. Moreover, by participating, they then learn and understand the message from the advertiser, personalise their relationship with the advertiser and their products (or services).
Consumers tend to filter out information they do not want to hear and this alters the effectiveness of advertising in quite a dramatic way. The purchaser’s decision is invariably a compromise and this leads to a certain amount of anxiety. The worry that perhaps the purchase decision was not the best or right one. In order to minimise this anxiety the purchaser seeks to reinforce his choice and begins to take more notice of his chosen product’s advertising. And, at the same time, the purchaser deliberately suppresses data, which might challenge his decision by ignoring the advertising of competitive brands.
People are often loyal to a brand simply because they do not want to readdress a decision. The opportunity to screen out undesired data always exists when media advertisements have to stand on their own and fight for attention. Interactive Communication takes the consumer through the barrier of not wanting to address change; and this is the ultimate market the advertiser is after – the people who use his competitors’ products.
Now the consumer can say ‘Yes, I will change my behaviour and I have a very good reason or series of reasons why”, and have a well-informed opinion or image in mind.
If someone goes into a product purchase decision with a very specific image of the product and its reason to exist and why they have decided those reasons are worth its purchase. The test in reality, the use of the product, will tend to confirm that premise, and therefore conversion will be enormously enhanced.
Interactive Marketing Communication turns passive advertising into active advertising and actually alters behaviour during the communication and learning process.

Most Businesses Make Use of Business Cards

Most business and professional people make use of business cards to introduce their businesses to their clients or patients. These serve a double purpose as they are a reminder of what the person does for a living and where they can be contacted when necessary. By utilising the backs of your cards either for writing in the date of the next appointment for you client or patient or noting your special offers and discounts you are making them twice as valuable to the recipient.
Regularly think up new ways of advertising as the space you have at your disposal is so limited. Change these offers so that your cards do not become stagnant. Your cards could be designed and printed at home to make them more cost effective. Make them attractive and colourful so that they will be eye catching to the passers by.
The main thing is how you are going to distribute them. You need to do this in the busy spots surrounding your premises. Shopping malls, train and bus stations and car parks are good places to start. The ideal situation is to make your business known to the people in the area of your store or place of business.
Make a point of always leaving a card in a conspicuous place when you have been in any public place. There will always be someone who will pick one up and read it and hopefully take it home with them. You have to be constantly thinking of ways to get your cards into the hands of the public.

Business Cards Are A Very Good Way Of Advertising Your Business

Business cards are a very good way of advertising your business and also one of the most inexpensive ways of doing it. You can design and print the cards your self or you can have them printed professionally which ever way suits you best. All you need on your cards is the usual information regarding your contact details and what it is that you do.
The backs of the cards can be reserved for printing your special offers. You will have to change your discounts periodically so that they do not become stagnant. The whole idea is to keep the public’s interest in the activities at your store or place of business.
Business cards are always a good way of advertising your business. To keep up with modern technology you could make use of CD’s. They carry the same message that the cards do only in a different form. This makes them more interesting but they still serve the same purpose. Think how much impact your advertising would have if you were making use not only of cards, but of CD’s as well. The use of modern technology puts a new edge on your advertising campaign.
You should never leave your home without your cards so that you will always be in the habit distributing cards to people wherever you find yourself.
Plan the distribution of your cards very well. Make sure that you distribute your cards in the area surrounding your premises. If you do not advertise your business no one will be aware of the fact that you are in the vicinity. The more you advertise the more customers you will get.
You need to print the essential details on your card in clear print with the relative information about your business venture. Many people relate better to a little information than a lot of detail that would be printed on a large flyer. You can use the reverse side of your cards for advertising special products or special discounts.
Try magnetising the cards by pasting a small magnet on the backs of them. You will now have added extra value to the cards. Most recipients will take these cards home to put on their fridges.

The World Of Video

Who would have thought that Email video or videos on websites would become so popular. It seems the sordid sites have been using them for years, yet may business have websites that are currently without any video clips on them. You have to ask yourself "why?"
Sending Emails with video on them is still a new concept but we have it available. Again, why are people not using it?
The real reason in our research is that it is still a new thing. Video in these formats is still in its product introductory curve, apparently still not making much progress up the slope to the dizzy heights of success.
This will change as more and more people get exposure to the technology. So will the future show people using video Emails. Absolutely. Will there be more video on websites. Absolutely. It will also take over the texting phenomenon of the younger generation. Video to mobile is now becoming a daily occurance for some and one day everybody will be doing it. So the main point is, people will make a lot of money if they are positioned now in the companies that promote it.
So history leaves clues. Those of use beyond 50 will remember black and white TV. Some remember 78s. Then LPs then cassettes, then the CD and now the DVD. The skeptics all shouted that this movement of progress would not work. Yes they are wrong again over the issues of email video and video on websites. You only need to look at the internet marketing style business opportunities websites to see a whole host of videos with people telling you how they made their millions.
So, who wants some of the action, so to speak?

How to Use Pay by Performance with A Marketing-Advertising Agency?

Friends from the Creative industry generally lamented about being under paid and under appreciated while clients were genuinely concerned if they can recoup their investments in creative and production costs. After I published "How to Pay your Advertising Agency?" at my blog and ezinearticles, I was specifically asked if I can provide an example of “Pay by Performance” with a marketing agency or advertising agency.
Assuming the client has a decent agency brief and the marketing/advertising/creative agency understood it perfectly, then they actually conceptualized an equally decent campaign; theoretically there should be good returns. However, the marketplace is a strange place where big changes can speedily shoot a hot product down into the bottom of a valley. Though rare, it has happened before. It is such uncertainties of the marketplace, doubts and fears of clients and the difficulty of quantifying the value of “creative” people that the quotation is grounds for heated debates.
I believed a fair price is one where the client and the marketing agency agreed upon. The price can be agreed upon but “unfairness” somehow would still cropped up. The client might not be able to attribute his success to the press advertisement as there was no tracking device established. The designer might start to believe he has been paid peanuts when the sales results hit the roof. Even nothing was said and expressed; dissatisfaction can quietly seep in and adversely affect an otherwise cohesive working relationship.
So instead of offering or accepting a fixed price, both parties can consider the “pay by performance” option. To “pay on results” or “pay by performance” is not as simple as it might appear. Marketing, advertising and communications is largely a skill based, creative industry; where the “products” are ideas and action taken. Just as a beautiful fireworks display is over when it’s over, ideas exposed can never be taken back to reuse and recycle in their original forms. I am sure you can see the challenges of a “pay by results” program. The real costs that were tough to measure are the creative cost though it is not impossible. To effectively deploy “pay by performance”, you would need to overcome various challenges, and those had been discussed at another of my article, "Does Pay by Performance works with an Advertising Agency?".
After considering those factors and you still think “pay by performance” is for you, you may like to consider this working model.
1. Established what constitutes sunk cost, which could easily mean time (for research, analysis, brainstorming, conceptualization, copywriting, visualizing, story-boarding, desktop execution), material (such as photography with photographer, models, studio, props or purchased photo images or database for direct mail), traveling expenses.
2. Establish the quantum of such cost. Where cost cannot be quantified, you can check with your Association of Accredited Ad Agencies for recommended rates.
3. Client needs to agree to the quotation and to paying the sunk costs
4. Both parties need to agree on the performance measure. This includes fixing the deliverables and determining the expected results for each of these deliverables. One of the most obvious, and accurate, deliverable would be response to the campaign. This is usually measured by including some kind of direct response within the campaign. It could be a call-in number, an email or a web site.
5. Payment of the performance level should have a clear end date. Companies should not be afraid to pay. Alternatively, they can put a cap on the quantum, assuming that they are expecting a runaway success for the campaign. Again, this cap needs to be agreed. For example, both parties can agree to a $50,000 or a $5,000,000 cap to the performance bonus portion of the agency fees depending on the size of the project.
There are of course many ways to spin this. Above is simply one way to look at a complex arrangement. I am sure you can come up with a few creative ways to do this.
